Results of the Archaeological Survey

The history of the west end of the church building suggests that it has been somewhat of a building site for the last one hundred and fifty years or more.

Two church towers have fallen. The original tower produced so much rubble that the west wall had to be broken open to remove the debris through the church. The present tower arch was formed at that time. A smaller tower replaced the original, but became unsafe after a land mine exploded nearby in World War II. This tower had to be taken down too.

Last but not least in terms of preserving any earlier archaeological remains, floor bricks were removed in the 1960s, when the platform for the old organ was built.

It is perhaps not surprising that the archaeological survey, which was completed by the middle of September found nothing. The removal of floor bricks at the west end of the church revealed nothing but sand.
